Erik Shaw expects the AllVerse to make him a billionaire. He despises video games, but charging other people to play them suits him. Then the launch traps him inside with over a billion players, and the remaining options leave him pulling an old rickshaw with a mouthy, octopus-like companion.

What makes it funny?
Erik believes firing someone should be personal, so he makes a point of using the employee’s name. He gets it wrong. The opening also has him ask what repugnant means, then interrupt before he can hear the answer.
The comedy at work
His first-person account gives him endless opportunities to admire himself while revealing what he fails to understand. The AllVerse strips away his executive privileges and makes him use its least glamorous leftovers, among players equipped for racing games and combat simulators.
Try this if…
Game parodies and an argumentative companion are part of the attraction, especially if you enjoy an arrogant narrator getting an enforced change of status. Readers in LitRPG groups describe being drawn in within the opening chapters and enjoying book one midway through; their early enthusiasm also extends to the audio.
Good to know
Erik starts as an abrasive protagonist who objectifies women, abuses employees and dismisses warnings about his product’s safety. His contempt for other people is on display before the game traps its users.
